8th Grade Science

Monday • (December 1st, 2008) - Looking for last week?: 11/24-28/08
Weather Glossary & Reading Station Model Plots- Weather
Learning Goal(s): Weather Definitions. Students will review atmosphere and weather vocabulary by making a list of definitions in the assignment below. Students will also work on reading Station Models plots using NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) and NWS (National Weather Service) international weather plot symbols used on weather maps. Weather plot symbol charts will be used in class. Websites with these symbols are linked below. Our goal is to use and understand these symbols in order for students to create their own detailed weather maps. These weather maps will be a culminating project for this unit (more info. later).

weatherdotcom Glossary NOAA Glossary U of Illinois Atmospheric Studies Glossary • Weather Glossaries: Visit any of these three for help with your Weather Definitions. Your book is a good resource too.
Station Model Plot Symbols NOAA American Meteorological Society Select Symbols UK Met Office Weather Map Symbols • Station Model Plot Symbols: These websites contain all the internationally used weather map symbols. Also check last week's links for further information.

Homework • Weather (including Atmosphere) Definitions: Your task, using your Science book along with the Weather Glossaries linked above, is to complete this Weather Definitions assignment... Due date: Wednesday, 12/3 - end of class period.

Homework • Reading Station Model Plots - You will have time to work on these in class today. See the three Station Model Plot Charts on the walls. If you are not in class today or did not finish, see the Station Model Plot links above. Here is the assignment: ReadingStationModels1.jpg -and- ReadingStationModels2.jpg
Due date: Tuesday, 12/2 - beginning of class period.

Tuesday • (December 2nd)
Weather Maps & Forecasting - Weather
Learning Goal(s): Students will work in small groups to construct a USA Weather Map and give weather forecasts and draw station models for 10 locations; each in a different geographical area of the USA.

Homework • 10 Location Weather Forecast: Using the current USA weather you are to forecast mid-day weather for 10 different geographical locations. Here's the map page: 10LocationWeatherForecast1.jpg and here is the station model / forecast page: 10LocationWeatherForecast2.jpg.
Due date: At end of class period.

Wednesday • (December 3rd)
Weather Maps - What types of weather are related to fronts?
Learning Goal(s): Students be reviewing weather maps using today's current weather map and working individually to complete their Weather Definitions and Station Model assignments. Students will also be given a study guide for Friday's quiz on Weather Map Symbols.

• Current USA Weather Maps - each map link has a different level of detail/complexity. It is highly suggested for students to view the current weather maps at each website to compare and contrast how weather information is displayed and interpreted.
TWC USA Weather USA Today Current Weather Map Intellicast USA Weather Map NOAA USA Weather Map
This is the one we often view in class. It contains general fronts, highs and lows and isobars. Updated hourly. This is the same map as the link to the left with quick links to definitions of fronts. A good review Web link. Updated hourly. This map shows more detailed frontal systems and the barometric pressure values are shown on the isobars. Updated every 3 hours. At this NOAA link select Continental USA (see below). You can also select a 3 or 7 day animation to see the passage of the fronts. If you do so, watch how fronts move around Low pressure areas.

Homework • Weather Map Symbols - This is not an assignment. It is a study guide/sheet to work on with fellow classmates. Use the front (sheet 1) to jot down notes about each symbol. Use the back (sheet 2) to quiz yourself on the symbols.

Note: Science teachers will be out of the building today attending a hands-on science workshop. Curious? Check this link: Loose In The Lab

Thursday • (December 4th)

Weather Maps & Symbols
Learning Goal(s): Students will visit USA Current Weather websites (see Wednesday's links) to construct a USA weather map. Students who have not completed their Weather Definitions will have more time to do so.

Friday • (December 5th) • End of 1st Trimester
  Weather Map Symbol Quiz
Learning Goal(s): Before the quiz.... Students are to use a USA Current Weather map sheet to copy today's weather onto (as you did yesterday). Once done you are to label all fronts then compile all the current USA weather maps you completed this week in order, staple them, then turn them in. Students who do not have a grade on their Weather Definitions assignment also need to turn these in today. During the last 15 minutes of the class period you will be taking the Weather Map Symbol Quiz (all matching). Please note that one symbol is used twice as an answer and some symbols will not be used.
